Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition (KSEC)

The Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition is a member-led grassroots organization that connects and empowers young Kentuckians to take action for a just, environmentally sustainable Kentucky.

Founded in 2007, KSEC creates inclusive, anti-oppressive, and accessible spaces where young people conduct peer-to-peer education, self-organize, and advocate for policies that put people over profit. In a state where many youth feel compelled to leave, KSEC helps young people envision and shape a Kentucky where they can stay and thrive.

Engaging Youth in Just Transition
Just Transition is woven into all of the Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition’s work. KSEC seeks to model the new world with its horizontal leadership structure and bottom up decision-making. KSEC is always learning best practices for this model, by building deep relationships with its members. KSEC will continue to learn how to best meet the needs of its members in a way that is anti-oppressive, intersectional, and moves Eastern Kentucky and Appalachia toward collective liberation.

Engaging Youth in Just Transition
The first phase of this project starts by interviewing various environmental and social justice organizations in Appalachia and across the country to determine the "best and brightest" solutions that are being discussed around economic transition. We will then vet those ideas through many young people in the region using a variety of tactics including campus tours, online participation, and a series of Youth Assemblies co-hosted by the STAY Project. The second phase of the project will include presenting our findings to partners and peers.
